Are Deliveroo riders self-employed?

Yes. In November 2023 the Supreme Court ruled that Deliveroo riders are not workers, largely because of the substitution right - a rider can send someone else to do the job. That closed a case the IWGB union had run for several years.

What is Evri Plus, the old self-employed plus?

Evri Plus is the current name for what began as the "self-employed plus" agreement between Evri and the GMB union. To qualify you commit to five or more days a week, including a Saturday or Sunday. In return Evri offers up to 28 days of paid holiday with cover arranged, a pension where you pay at least 5% of invoiced earnings and Evri adds 3%, parental leave, GMB-agreed pay for non-parcel tasks, optional accident and sickness cover for a fee, and guaranteed earnings above the National Living Wage.

How does driving for DPD work?

DPD work in the UK is typically done as a self-employed owner-driver franchisee - you provide a van, usually in DPD livery, and run a fixed round - or as a subcontractor driving for someone who holds one of those franchises.

Do I need a van for parcel delivery?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the work. Amazon Flex blocks and most Evri rounds are done in ordinary cars - what matters is boot space, a low loading lip and being small enough to park easily, not having a van. Amazon asks for a mid-size car or larger with five or more seats, and offers e-bike blocks in some areas. DPD Connect also uses your own car.

Do I need a licence to drive for Uber?

Carrying passengers with Uber needs a private hire vehicle driver licence issued by your local licensing authority, plus a licensed vehicle and private hire insurance. That involves a medical, a DBS check, and in many areas a knowledge or English test, and it takes weeks to months.

Yes for tax. Evri couriers are self-employed, so nobody deducts tax before you are paid and you file your own Self Assessment return.

It depends on the specific arrangement, and it is one of the areas where the label on the contract and the legal reality have not always matched. A 2017 tribunal found Addison Lee drivers to be workers, the Court of Appeal refused Addison Lee permission to appeal in 2021, and a tribunal found the same for a larger group of around 700 drivers in January 2025. Addison Lee now pays holiday pay on every job.

Flex pays per block. You see the amount and the block length before you accept, and that amount is what you get whether the block takes the scheduled time or considerably longer.
