Class 4. It is 6% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% on anything above that. It is worked out on the same profit figure as your income tax and paid at the same time, through Self Assessment.

Class 2 used to be a flat weekly charge on top. Compulsory Class 2 was abolished from 6 April 2024. If your profits are above the Small Profits Threshold of £7,105 you are now treated as having paid it: you pay nothing and you still get the qualifying year toward your State Pension.

Below £7,105 you pay no Class 4 and get no automatic qualifying year, but you can pay Class 2 voluntarily at £3.65 a week, which is £189.80 for the year.

JoltMile always includes Class 4 in its tax estimate, with no way to turn it off, and never adds voluntary Class 2 to it, because a voluntary contribution is not a tax charge. Self-employed National Insurance rates (opens in a new tab).
