How does Amazon Flex pay work?

You are paid a fixed amount per block, agreed before you accept it. It does not change if the block takes longer, which is what makes the hourly rate worth tracking.

Flex pays per block. You see the amount and the block length before you accept, and that amount is what you get whether the block takes the scheduled time or considerably longer.

That is the whole reason the hourly rate matters. A four-hour block at a given rate looks fine until it regularly runs to five hours, at which point the real rate is a fifth lower than the advertised one and the extra hour cost you fuel as well.

Blocks are released in batches and get taken quickly in busy areas. Rates move with demand, so the same block on a wet December evening pays differently from a quiet Tuesday in February. Amazon pays every Wednesday for blocks completed the previous Monday to Sunday.

You are self-employed for this work. Nothing is deducted, you register with HMRC yourself, and the mileage claim at 55p a mile is usually your biggest deduction because parcel rounds cover a lot of ground.

JoltMile logs the block, the hours it actually took and the miles, and shows what the block really paid once fuel and time are in.

When each app pays you, and why the date matters for tax

Most apps pay weekly, on different days, with a fee to get it sooner. Evri pays monthly. The pay date decides how much cash you need in reserve and, at the start and end of the year, which tax year the money falls in.

How Amazon Flex pay works

Amazon Flex pays a fixed price for a block of time, quoted before you accept it. The figure is gross, it says nothing about the miles the route will run, and everything after that, fuel, insurance, wear and tax, comes out of it.
