Everything you need to run the business side of driving

JoltMile is a phone app that records every shift you work, keeps a running total of what it costs you, and gives an honest answer to the only question that matters: what is an hour of this actually worth?

Your first 10 shifts are free.

Start shift

One tap to start. One tap to end.

The drive is the part of the job nobody wants to write down. So the phone does it: tap Start shift when you set off, and JoltMile notes the time and the nearest postcode and counts the miles while you work. Tap End shift when you finish and the end postcode and the miles are filled in. The shift wizard then asks for the one thing it cannot know, which is what the shift paid.

  • Start time and nearest postcode, captured as you set off
  • Miles counted while the shift runs, breaks included
  • The running shift on your lock screen, with an End button
  • End postcode, business miles and your commute, filled in
  • Keeps going with no signal and syncs when you are back
  • Only the miles and two postcodes kept; raw positions thrown away

What JoltMile does

Every item below is in the app today. Nothing here is planned or coming soon.

The drive itself, captured by the phone rather than typed in afterwards.

  • One tap to start

Tap Start shift when you set off. The time and the nearest postcode are noted, and your platform and vehicle are remembered from last time.

  • Miles measured for you

Your location measures the miles while the shift runs and stops the moment it ends. Only the miles and the postcode at each end are kept.

  • Breaks and blocks

Take a break and the clock pauses. Several blocks in one day stay in one shift.

  • On your lock screen

A running shift shows its time on the lock screen, with an End button, so you never have to open the app to check it.

  • One tap to end

End shift fills in the business miles, the end postcode and your commute home, then the wizard asks what the shift paid.

Getting the rest of the shift in, in the car park, in under a minute.

  • The shift wizard

What it paid, whether you had parcels to return, any notes. Skip the questions that never apply to you. An unfinished shift saves as a draft.

  • Miles, split properly

Business miles and commuting miles kept apart, with a postcode-to-postcode calculator when you are logging a shift after the fact.

  • Works without signal

No bars at the depot is not a problem. The shift is saved on your phone and syncs when you are back on data.

The money that leaves again, counted at the same level of detail as the money coming in.

  • Fuel

Cost per mile from your own MPG and pump price, checked against the weekly UK average. Petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric.

  • Expenses and receipts

20 categories, each marked allowable or not, with the receipt photographed straight onto the expense. Recurring costs like a phone bill add themselves.

  • Insurance

Annual, monthly or per-hour cover spread across the driving it covers, so one month does not absorb the lot.

What an hour of driving is worth once fuel, costs and tax have come out of it.

  • True hourly rate

Gross, after costs and after tax, per shift and across the year. Pick which one heads your Earnings tab.

  • HMRC mileage allowance

55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles, then 25p, applied per shift with your cumulative miles tracked so the rate drops at the right mile.

  • Tax estimate

Income tax and Class 4 National Insurance from your running profit, using the real UK bands.

  • Other income and PAYE

Add a job, rent or another trade, with the tax your employer already took, and the estimate covers your whole year.

A year of driving you can hand to HMRC, an accountant, or yourself in eighteen months.

  • Self Assessment export

Turnover, mileage allowance, allowable expenses and taxable profit, as a CSV or a PDF, with quarterly figures for Making Tax Digital.

  • Key dates and reminders

The Self Assessment and payment on account dates that carry a penalty, worked out for you, with reminders on your phone.

  • Jolt, the built-in assistant

Ask it about the app, the platforms, or the tax side of driving self-employed. Questions about your own figures are answered from the app's own arithmetic, and never leave your phone.

  • Your account on the web

Log in at joltmile.com to export your figures, add expenses and receipts from a computer, back up your data or manage your account.

Shift wizard

A shift, and what it was actually worth

When the shift ends, the wizard asks what it paid and a couple of quick questions, then saves it. JoltMile applies HMRC's approved mileage rate as you go, counts your cumulative miles so the rate drops at the right mile, and shows what the hour really paid once fuel, insurance and tax come off it.

  • Business miles and commuting miles recorded separately
  • Separate rates for car or van, motorcycle and bicycle
  • Questions that never apply to you can be skipped for good
  • An unfinished shift is kept as a draft

Expenses & Other Income

Allowable, not allowable, and the difference in your pocket

Log what you spend and JoltMile keeps track of which costs reduce your taxable profit and which do not. A parking charge does. A parking fine never will. Both still come out of your earnings, so both are tracked. If you have a job as well, log the payslip too, so your tax estimate covers everything you earn.

  • 20 categories drawn from what delivery drivers actually spend on
  • Photograph the receipt onto the expense, or add it from a computer on the website
  • Allowable expenses feed straight into the tax estimate
  • A PAYE job goes in as gross pay and the tax already deducted, so that tax is not counted twice

Your shift log

Every shift you have worked, and a mileage record you can hand over

One log across every platform. Filter it by date, platform or a search, open any shift to see what it came to, and export the lot as a mileage log in CSV or PDF if HMRC ever asks you to show your business miles.

  • Business miles and commuting miles exported separately, because only one of them is claimable
  • The start and end postcodes, and the rate each shift was claimed at, kept on the record

Earnings summary

A month-by-month view that adds up

Hours, earnings, mileage, fuel and your true hourly rate for every month and week you have worked, across the tax year from 6 April to 5 April.

  • Filter by platform to see which app is actually worth your evening
  • Open any month to see it week by week

Self Assessment

Figures ready when the deadline is not the problem

Turnover, mileage allowance, allowable expenses and taxable profit, kept current as you drive. An estimate of what to set aside, and an export for your return or your accountant.

  • Income tax and Class 4 National Insurance estimated from your running profit
  • A job or other income in the same bands, with PAYE tax already paid taken off at the end
  • CSV and PDF export, from the app or from your account on the website
  • Reminders for the dates that carry a penalty

Where JoltMile fits

Four things worth knowing before you rely on it.

Your figures, export ready

Turnover, mileage allowance, allowable expenses and taxable profit, as a CSV or a PDF. Hand it to your accountant, or type it straight into your Self Assessment.

HMRC rules, with the source linked

It applies HMRC's published rules to the numbers you enter and links the gov.uk page behind each one. Where your situation is unusual, take it to an accountant.

Your location, only on a shift

The app measures your miles from your location between Start shift and End shift, and stops there. Only the miles and the two postcodes are kept.

One record across every app

You enter your earnings, which is what lets a single log cover Flex, Uber, Deliveroo and the rest, and what keeps it working the week a platform changes its app.

Want to know how a figure is worked out?

JoltMile Help explains every calculation in the app: what it uses, why it asks for what it asks for, and where the numbers come from.

JoltMile Help

Try it on your own driving

The first 10 shifts are free, which is enough to see whether the numbers tell you something you did not already know.
