Will my insurance cover me if I carry both passengers and takeaways?
Standard policies will not cover both. You need a combined hire and reward policy that explicitly names both passenger transport and food delivery.
Last checked 17/10/2026.
Standard private hire insurance only covers carrying passengers. It will not pay out if you are stopped or have an accident while carrying hot food or parcels. Standard courier insurance only covers goods and will not cover fee paying passengers. Doing both requires specific cover.
If you mix taxi work with multi app food delivery, you must check your policy wording carefully. Many mainstream insurers treat these as entirely different risk groups. Driving with the wrong class of use leaves you driving without valid insurance, which can lead to penalty points and a seized vehicle.
How to get the right cover
- Speak to specialist broker firms that understand dual purpose work.
- Check that your certificate of motor insurance lists both passenger carriage and fast food or parcel delivery.
- Declare every platform you work on to your insurer so there are no grey areas.
