What it is

JoltMile is a phone app, on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. It is where you start and end your shifts, log what they paid, add your expenses and read your figures.

Get JoltMile on the App Store (opens in a new tab). It is free to download, and your first shifts are free too.

Getting set up

  1. Download JoltMile from the App Store.
  2. Create an account with Apple, with Google, or with an email and a password. If you already have a JoltMile account, sign in with that one instead, and everything you have logged is already there.
  3. Answer the setup questions about your vehicle, your fuel and the platforms you drive for. They take about a minute and every one of them changes a figure later.

What it does

  • Start shift. Press it when you set off and the app keeps the time for you, breaks included, with the running shift on your lock screen. Press End shift and the shift wizard opens with the times already in. More in logging a shift.
  • Miles measured for you. While a shift you started is running, the app measures your miles and notes the postcode at each end. It stops the moment you end the shift and keeps only the miles and the two postcodes, never a map. More in miles measured for you.
  • Receipts at the pump. Take a photo of a receipt from inside the expense form, before the paper ends up in a bin.
  • Reminders that arrive on their own, for Self Assessment deadlines and payments on account. See deadline reminders.
  • It copes with no signal. A shift or expense saved without signal is kept on the phone and sent when you are back online. See working offline.

Your account on the website

Log in at joltmile.com with the same account and you get a small account area for the jobs that suit a desk: exporting your Self Assessment figures and your mileage log, seeing any tax year at a glance, adding expenses with receipts that are already on your computer, backing up your data, and looking after your account.

Paying through Apple

If you subscribe in the app, Apple bills you and the subscription is tied to your Apple ID. To cancel it:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Tap your name, then Subscriptions.
  3. Choose JoltMile and cancel.

Cancelling keeps your access to the end of the period you have paid for, and never deletes anything you have logged. A refund on an Apple subscription is Apple's decision rather than ours, and you ask for one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Your subscription is still a claimable expense. JoltMile adds each payment to your expenses automatically. See the subscription expense.

Android

The Android app is on its way to Google Play. Get the app will take you to it on the day it is released.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Making a second account with a different email or sign-in. Your records are on the account you already have, so sign in with that one.
  • Paying twice. One subscription covers your account, whichever way you paid for it.
  • Cancelling in the wrong place. Cancel wherever you subscribed: in your Apple account or in Google Play.
