The shift log and its columns

Finding a shift, what each figure against it means, and editing or deleting one.

What it is

The Shifts tab: every shift you have logged in the selected tax year, newest first. Each one is a card showing the date, the platform, the times, the hours, the business miles and the earnings, plus True £/hr and Take-home pay, the figures worth reading per shift. The coloured bar down the left is the platform's own colour, so a week of mixed work can be read at a glance.

Nothing is hidden: open a shift and it lists every figure, Compare ranks your shifts by any one of them, and the exports carry all of them. Search and the filters find a shift by platform, date or notes.

What the figures mean

FigureWhat it is
Business miClaimable miles only. Your commute is excluded.
Total miBusiness plus commuting. This is what the fuel cost is based on.
FuelCost for all miles, at the price saved with that shift.
Business fuelCost for the business miles alone.
AllowanceThe HMRC mileage allowance the shift earned.
RateWhat that works out at per business mile. A shift straddling the 10,000-mile threshold shows its blended rate.
TaxThe difference this shift made to your running tax estimate for the year.
Current balanceEarnings minus every cost and estimated tax.
Take-home payEarnings minus business fuel, insurance and tax only.

Editing a shift

Open a shift and press Edit, and the wizard reopens with everything filled in. One thing worth knowing: an edited shift keeps the fuel price it was logged at, not today's. Correcting the notes on a shift from six months ago does not re-price its fuel. If a shift genuinely was priced wrong, you can change the price on the review step, and that changes only that shift.

Deleting a shift

Deleting removes it from every figure it fed - the year totals, the tax estimate, your mileage ring. That is the right behaviour and it is not reversible, so a full backup before a clear-out is worth the thirty seconds.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting the log to show another tax year. Change the tax year on the Earnings tab first.
  • Deleting a shift to start it again. Edit it instead, and it keeps the fuel price it was logged at.
