Hire and reward insurance

Hire and reward is the class of motor insurance that covers carrying goods or passengers for payment. Ordinary social, domestic and pleasure cover, and even business use, does not include it.

The phrase is old and the meaning is narrow: you are being paid to move something or someone. Delivering a pizza is hire and reward. Driving to a meeting for your employer is not.

What it means for your money

Driving on the wrong policy means an insurer can refuse the claim, and driving without valid insurance is an offence in its own right. The exposure is the value of the other car plus your licence, not the premium you saved.

Within hire and reward there are narrower products: food delivery cover for hot food on short local runs, courier cover for parcels, and goods in transit for the value of what you are carrying.

Hire and reward against courier and food delivery cover

Hire and reward is the class of cover you need to carry goods or people for payment. Within it, food delivery cover suits short local hot-food runs, courier cover suits parcels, and goods in transit covers the value of what you are carrying rather than the driving.

FAQ

What is hire and reward insurance?

Cover for carrying goods or passengers for payment. An ordinary social, domestic and pleasure policy does not include it, and delivering without it invalidates the policy.

Claiming on the wrong policy, and what happens

If you have an accident while delivering on a policy that does not cover hire and reward, the insurer can refuse the claim and can void the policy from the start. You are then personally liable for the other party's damage, and driving uninsured is a separate offence.
