Goods in Transit (GIT) insurance for UK gig drivers
Learn what Goods in Transit insurance protects, how it differs from Hire and Reward cover, and why couriers need it.
Last checked 17/10/2026.
Goods in Transit insurance is a specialist policy that protects the cargo you are carrying in your car, van or bike. If parcels are stolen from your vehicle, or if a stack of hot food gets crushed in an accident, this policy pays out for the loss.
Standard car insurance and basic Hire and Reward policies only cover your legal liability to other people and damage to your own vehicle. They typically exclude the customer goods you have on board. If you deliver parcels for companies like Evri or Amazon Flex, check your contract, because many require you to hold this cover before you start working.
