Understanding the DPD Owner Driver Franchise Model
Driving for DPD as an owner driver is different from doing multi app work on food delivery apps. You are not just picking up shifts when you feel like it. You are running a small logistics business built around a specific delivery round. Most DPD owner drivers operate through a limited company rather than as sole traders. This setup protects your personal assets and is often required by the depot network.
When you take on a round, you agree to cover a specific postcode area every single weekday. You supply your own van, you pay for your own fuel, and you manage your own insurance. In return, you get a regular parcel volume and a weekly invoice payment from DPD. Your earnings depend on how many stops and parcels you clear, minus your running costs.
Setting Up Your Limited Company
Before you can sign an agreement with your local DPD depot, you need to form your limited company. You can do this directly through Companies House online. Choose a clear company name, register a registered office address, and appoint yourself as the director.
Once your company is registered, open a dedicated business bank account. Do not mix your personal spending with your DPD earnings. Every fuel receipt, van lease payment, and weekly invoice from DPD needs to flow through this business account to keep your bookkeeping clean.
- Register your limited company with Companies House.
- Set up a separate business bank account for all company transactions.
- Register for Corporation Tax with HMRC once your company is active.
Finding and Buying a Round
Rounds become available when an existing driver wants to sell up and move on, or when DPD expands its delivery network in a local area. You will need to speak directly to the operations manager or franchise manager at your local DPD depot to find out what is on offer.
Buying an established round usually involves an upfront cost paid to the outgoing driver or the depot. In exchange, you get an immediate income stream with regular customers and established daily volume. Make sure you check the average stop count and the geographical spread of the round before you commit your money.
Getting the Right Van and Insurance
Your van is your office and your main tool. DPD will expect a clean, white, sign-written van that meets their specific size guidelines. Most drivers either lease a suitable medium wheel base panel van or buy one through vehicle finance.
You also need proper commercial insurance. Standard social and domestic car insurance will not cover you for delivering parcels for money. You need hire and reward insurance, along with goods in transit cover to protect the parcels in the back of your van.
- Source a van that meets DPD depot branding and size rules.
- Secure hire and reward insurance plus goods in transit cover.
- Fit any required tracking or safety equipment requested by the depot.
Taxes, Accounting, and Records
Running a limited company means you have distinct reporting duties. You must file annual accounts with Companies House and a Company Tax Return with HMRC. If your taxable turnover crosses the VAT registration threshold of £90,000, you must register for VAT, charge VAT on your invoices, and file regular VAT returns.
Keep every single receipt for fuel, maintenance, insurance, and phone bills. You must keep these business records for 5 years after the filing deadline. If you lease your van or buy tools for the job, those costs count as business expenses that reduce your company profit before corporation tax is calculated.
