What is an Amazon Flex surge rate
Standard base rates on Amazon Flex are the minimum amounts offered for a scheduled delivery block. A surge rate happens when Amazon increases the payout for a specific block because demand is high and not enough drivers have accepted work. The app adds extra money to the base rate to tempt drivers into picking up the route.
Surge rates are never guaranteed. They fluctuate based on local conditions, the time of year, and how many drivers are logged into the app in your area. Waiting for a surge takes patience, and sometimes blocks get snapped up at base rate before they ever rise.
Timing patterns for surge blocks
While Amazon does not publish an exact schedule for higher payouts, experienced drivers notice common windows when surge rates tend to appear. Knowing these patterns helps you decide when to refresh your app.
- Short notice drops: Blocks starting within the hour often surge because Amazon needs drivers urgently to cover unassigned routes.
- Early mornings and late evenings: Blocks at unsociable hours struggle for coverage, leading to higher rates.
- Bad weather: Heavy rain, snow, or high winds often push rates up as fewer drivers choose to work.
- Busy retail periods: Prime Day, Black Friday, and the weeks leading up to Christmas see frequent surge pricing due to heavy parcel volumes.
Risks of waiting for a surge
Waiting exclusively for surge rates can backfire. If you hold out too long, all available blocks in your area might disappear entirely, leaving you with zero earnings for the day. You have to balance the chance of a higher payout against the risk of going home empty-handed.
Common questions
- Do surge rates apply to all block types?
- Surge rates can appear on grocery deliveries, logistics blocks, and Morrisons runs, but they are most common on parcel logistics blocks when depots face high volume and driver shortages.
- Will my acceptance rate drop if I ignore base rate blocks?
- Amazon Flex does not penalise you for letting base rate blocks pass by. You are an independent contractor and can choose which blocks to accept or decline.

Amazon Flex pays a fixed price for a block of time, quoted before you accept it. The figure is gross, it says nothing about the miles the route will run, and everything after that, fuel, insurance, wear and tax, comes out of it.

How does Amazon Flex pay work?
You are paid a fixed amount per block, agreed before you accept it. It does not change if the block takes longer, which is what makes the hourly rate worth tracking.

Amazon Flex or an Amazon delivery partner job?
There are two ways to deliver Amazon parcels. Flex is self-employed, in your own car, a block at a time. A Delivery Service Partner job is with a separate company that provides the van and usually sets a full day. They are different jobs with different tax.
