Class 2 National Insurance
Class 2 is the flat weekly National Insurance contribution that builds state pension entitlement. Compulsory Class 2 was abolished from 6 April 2024; you can still pay it voluntarily at £3.65 a week.
Correct for the 2026/27 tax year. Last checked 12/09/2026.
Profits at or above the small profits threshold are treated as if Class 2 had been paid, so the qualifying year is credited without a payment. Below it, nothing is credited unless you choose to pay.
What it means for your money
A full year costs £189.80. Against a state pension that needs 35 qualifying years for the full amount, that is usually the cheapest pension contribution available to anybody, and it is worth checking your record before deciding.
The small profits threshold is £7,105. A part-time driver earning under it in a year gets no credit for that year unless they pay.
