How pay works at Yodel and Evri

Both Yodel and Evri rely on self-employed couriers to deliver parcels across local rounds. You do not get a fixed hourly wage. Instead, you are paid per parcel delivered, with extra amounts sometimes added for heavy items or rural miles. Your actual take-home pay depends entirely on how many drops you can clear in a shift and how much fuel you burn.

Evri tends to have a massive volume of small, standard parcels. Rounds are often tight knit in housing estates. Yodel handles a mix of standard drops and larger home delivery network items, which can mean fewer stops per hour if you are lifting heavier boxes. Whether one pays better than the other usually comes down to your local depot and the specific round you are assigned.

Comparing round density and fuel costs

Fuel is your biggest daily expense. A high drop density means you drive fewer miles between each front door. If you are on an Evri round with multi-drop streets, your fuel cost per parcel stays low. If a Yodel round sends you down long country lanes for fewer drops, your fuel eats into your earnings much faster.

When you work out your profit, remember to deduct your running costs. You can use the standard mileage rate if you use cars and vans, which is 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year, and 25p per mile after that. If you drive a motorcycle, the rate is 24p per mile. For bicycles, it is 20p per mile.

Flexibility and daily reality

  • Evri lets you sort parcels at your local sub-depot early in the morning before heading out on your round.
  • Yodel couriers also collect from local depots and aim to finish deliveries by early evening.
  • Both networks require you to supply your own vehicle, insurance, and smartphone.
  • Your earnings depend on your own tax situation. If your total taxable income goes over the personal allowance of £12,570, you will pay Income Tax and Class 4 National Insurance on profits.

When each app pays you, and why the date matters for tax

Most apps pay weekly, on different days, with a fee to get it sooner. Evri pays monthly. The pay date decides how much cash you need in reserve and, at the start and end of the year, which tax year the money falls in.
