What does SORN mean for my delivery car?
Learn what a SORN means for your delivery car if it is off the road for repairs, saving you money on vehicle tax.
Last checked 17/10/2026.
Statutory Off Road Notification, or SORN, is an official notice you give to let authorities know your car is not being used on public roads. You might need this if your delivery car is off the road for major repairs, or if you are taking a break from gig work for a few months.
What SORN means for your costs
When a SORN is active on your vehicle, you do not need to pay vehicle tax. You can also get a refund for any full remaining months of tax left on the vehicle. Your insurance provider might also let you pause or alter your policy, but your car must be kept off public roads, such as on a driveway or in a garage.
